The real 2026 battleground isn't about Waqf boards or farm laws — it's about who owns the Dalit narrative in India.
Priyank Kharge, Congress MLA and Dalit, criticized the BJP government's Waqf land seizures in Karnataka. Standard opposition politics. But the BJP MP's response wasn't a policy counter-argument. It was surgical: "Why should a Dalit worry about RSS?" The question wasn't innocent. It was a complete inversion of Congress's 70-year brand promise — that RSS is casteist, that Dalits need Congress protection, that Hindu nationalism threatens backward castes.
The BJP MP did something Congress never anticipated. He didn't defend RSS. He questioned the premise. He asked: Why would a Dalit be afraid? Implying — RSS isn't your enemy. Congress has been lying to you. We protect you better. We give you reservations, welfare, dignity without making you permanent victims. You don't need Congress's pity. You need BJP's development.
This isn't a Karnataka dustup. This is a state-by-state dismantling of Congress's foundational political currency — Dalit victimhood politics.
Look at the pattern. West Bengal: Mamata killed Congress's Dalit vote by offering development + regional identity instead of caste grievance. Tamil Nadu: TVK emerged by offering Tamil pride over caste-based politics. Now Karnataka: BJP is explicitly telling Dalits — you're not victims, you're beneficiaries. Your fear of RSS is manufactured. We're the party of reservation, of uplift, of actual jobs and industry. Congress kept you in a ghetto of grievance. We're offering you citizenship.
The deeper game: Congress's entire political economy depends on making Dalits believe they're perpetually under threat. Threat = votes. Safety = Congress wins. But what happens when another force offers both safety AND development? What if RSS genuinely stops being casteist in practice (whatever its history)? What if BJP actually delivers reservations, SC/ST welfare, infrastructure in Dalit areas? Congress's entire business model collapses. Not because Dalits stop being oppressed — but because they stop believing Congress has a monopoly on protection.
This is why 2026 will be decided in constituencies like Priyank Kharge's. Not because of ideology. Because of narrative capture.
Congress invented modern Indian Dalit politics. Ambedkar, Mandal Commission, reservation politics — Congress made these real. But Congress also trapped Dalits in a permanent victimhood framework. "Vote for us, you'll be safe." For 70 years, Dalits voted out of fear, not hope.
Now BJP is offering a different contract: Vote for us, you'll develop. More SC/ST entrepreneurs. More Dalit IAS officers. More Dalit-owned businesses in tier-2 cities. Not sympathy. Success. And here's what Congress doesn't understand — this is more powerful. A Dalit who becomes a factory owner, a software engineer, a government officer — he's not going back to victimhood politics. He's bought in. His kids don't need Congress's reservation lectures. They want good schools and jobs.
The RSS narrative shift is secondary. The real story is that Congress's 70-year lock on Dalit politics is breaking. And the party has no backup strategy. No new narrative. Just older versions of the same fear playbook.
By 2026, expect three things. First, more "why should Dalits fear us" provocations from BJP. Expect them in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan — everywhere Congress still controls Dalit vote banks. Second, Congress will double down on fear messaging, but it'll feel hollow because younger Dalit voters have already started voting their interests, not their anxieties. Third, whichever party successfully converts Dalit politics from victimhood to agency wins 2026. Not just who governs — who governs the next 25 years.
The Karnataka fight is just the opening move.
