CBSE Just Killed Sanskrit — And Didn't Tell Anyone

Your child can now graduate from a central board school in India without understanding a single word of the language that built this civilization.

What Actually Happened

On June 29, 2026, CBSE announced that the three-language policy for classes 7, 8, and 9 would be "eased." Translation: Sanskrit is no longer compulsory even as an optional choice. A student in Delhi can now study Mandarin instead of Sanskrit. A Tamil student can skip Tamil entirely. A Gujarati child can graduate without touching a single regional language if the school permits it.

This is not a small policy tweak. This is the formal abandonment of an already watered-down requirement. The three-language formula itself was flawed — Hindi, English, regional language. Sanskrit was supposed to be the fourth option, the civilisational anchor. Now even that anchor has been cut. What remains is a hollow choice between languages that have nothing to do with who we are.

What This Means for India

Let me decode the pattern. In 1835, Macaulay sat in London and decided Indians should learn English to become "civilised." We resisted, got independence, and then... we finished his job ourselves. We didn't just accept English. We made it the language of power. We marginalized Sanskrit so thoroughly that today's urban Indian elite sees it as a burden, not a heritage.

This CBSE decision is the final nail. It signals that Sanskrit — the language of the Vedas, the Upanishads, the language in which 2000 years of Indian philosophy, mathematics, medicine, and law were codified — is now optional to the point of irrelevance. A Brahmin child studying commerce in Mumbai can graduate without reading a single sloka. A Kshatriya child can become a doctor without knowing the Sushruta Samhita. A Vaishya in business school can build an empire without understanding the Arthashastran concepts embedded in Sanskrit economic philosophy.

We are not raising Indians anymore. We are raising global citizens who happen to be born in India.

The Deeper Story Nobody is Telling

Here is what the education board will not say: this policy serves a specific ideology. Make Sanskrit optional, and within one generation it disappears. Make it optional, and the schools with resources will drop it because it is "difficult." English-medium schools in tier-1 cities will abandon it. Only struggling vernacular schools in tier-2 towns will cling to it. Within 30 years, Sanskrit knowledge will be confined to a small community of scholars and priests, cut off from mainstream India.

This is not incompetence. It is engineering. The same forces that convinced Indians that Sanskrit was "dead" 200 years ago are still at work. They are smarter now. They do not ban Sanskrit. They make it optional. They make it optional, then they make it irrelevant. Then they make it extinct. And the Indian education board helps them do it.

The Vedic Pattern

The Vedic civilization survived invasions, migrations, religious conversions, and political collapses because Sanskrit held it together. Sanskrit was not the language of priests alone — it was the language through which a merchant understood profit, a farmer understood seasons, a healer understood medicine, a king understood justice. It was the operating system of Bharat. The moment you disconnect a civilization from its operating system, it does not disappear. It becomes a zombie — alive but without purpose, without direction, without memory of what it was meant to be.

You cannot build a skyscraper without knowing the principles of engineering. You cannot run a company without understanding business logic. And you cannot run a civilization without connection to its founding code.
