India isn't sitting at this table because the West wants us there out of charity. Modi is there because India has become the only power that can swing the global balance, and frankly, neither Washington nor Brussels can afford to negotiate the next decade without locking India in.

What Actually Happened

Modi landed in France as part of an expanded G7 format where India has been invited as an "outreach" partner alongside Brazil and South Africa. On the surface, this looks like a feel-good multilateral moment — world leaders discussing sustainable development, climate action, and global governance. The official Indian statement talks about "engaging with world leaders on issues of mutual concern," and yes, that's technically true.

But here's what's actually happening: India is sitting at a table designed by the US and Europe to counter China's rise, and we're doing it without giving away our strategic independence. Modi isn't there to rubber-stamp Western decisions. He's there to extract value. Every meeting, every bilateral, every framework discussion is a negotiation where India holds more cards than it did five years ago. France specifically invited India because European capitals have woken up to a simple truth — you cannot contain China without India's supply chains, without India's defence manufacturing capacity, and without India's control of the Indian Ocean.

What This Means for India

This is India's moment to reset its terms of engagement with the West on defence, technology, and trade — and we should be ruthless about it. The G7 format has historically been a Western club designed to set global rules. India's presence — and our ability to walk away — changes the entire dynamics. When Modi sits down with Biden, Macron, or Sunak, he's not negotiating from a position of a developing nation seeking favors. He's negotiating as the leader of a civilizational economy that both the US-led West and China need.

For our defence and military establishment, this matters directly. Every advanced defence technology we acquire now should come with serious tech transfer agreements. Every joint venture, every strategic partnership should strengthen India's indigenous capability. The West is desperate to lock India into its supply chain networks — semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, rare earth processing. This is leverage. Use it.

The deeper calculation: India's non-alignment has returned, but in a 21st-century avatar. We're not sitting between superpowers playing both sides passively. We're actively playing multiple powers against each other to secure our own civilizational rise. The West knows it. China knows it. And Modi knows it.

The Deeper Story Nobody is Telling

Here's what the mainstream media won't say: India's real power right now isn't military superiority — we're not there yet. It's irreplaceability. The US cannot build its Indo-Pacific strategy without India locked in. Europe cannot contain China without India's manufacturing. China cannot ignore India's 1.4 billion consumer market and strategic geography. This is a rare historical moment where scarcity of alternatives gives you power.

What Modi is actually extracting at this G7 is not a new "global order." He's extracting bilateral terms — better defence contracts, faster tech transfer timelines, favorable trade terms, and most importantly, the West's acceptance that India will maintain its strategic autonomy. India will cooperate with the West when it suits us. We'll cooperate with Russia when it suits us. We'll compete with China when it suits us. And nobody can force our hand anymore because we're too important.

What Comes Next

Expect three things: First, accelerated defence partnerships and tech transfer agreements between India and Western nations over the next 12-18 months. Second, India will position itself as the counterweight to Chinese dominance in global supply chains and manufacturing. Third, India will increasingly set its own conditions for participation in Western frameworks rather than accepting them as given.

This isn't ideology — it's geometry. India's position, resources, and growing capability have made us the swing power. Modi understands this. The West is learning it. And our defence and military strategy should be built on this foundation.
