The sections used? Section 188 (disobedience to order) and Section 336 (endangering life). Tools inherited from colonial rule, dusted off and weaponised. The protesters had committed one crime: they hadn't taken "permission" for their assembly. This is Mumbai in 2024, not some backwater district. This is a Congress-NCP government state, not a BJP stronghold where everyone expects this. Yet the machinery worked exactly the same. Speed and scale both matter here. The genius of this system is that it works across governments. Congress or BJP, the police use the same colonial toolbox. The "permission slip" mechanism — ostensibly for "public safety" — has become the gatekeeper that decides who gets to dissent and who doesn't. If you have political connections, you get permission.
