Is it stress or your hormones? Bengaluru gynecologist Dr Soumya Lakshmi debunks 10 hormonal health myths

# Birth Control Pills Are Symptom Suppressors, Not Healers — A Manufacturing Engineer's Analysis

Your daughter has been on hormonal contraceptives for seven years. Her periods are regular. Her acne cleared up. She feels normal. What you do not know is that her liver is still struggling to process estrogen, her gut bacteria are still disrupted, and the root cause of her hormonal chaos remains untouched.

What Actually Happened

Bengaluru gynecologist Dr. Soumya Lakshmi recently challenged ten persistent hormonal health myths in mainstream Indian healthcare. The core finding: birth control pills do not fix hormones — they mask them. When a woman takes oral contraceptives for irregular periods or acne, she gets symptomatic relief within weeks. The bleeding becomes predictable. The skin clears. The fatigue might even improve temporarily. This is not healing. This is pharmaceutical camouflage.

The mechanism is simple enough that any manufacturing engineer can grasp it. Birth control pills suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. They prevent ovulation artificially. They do not restore the four root causes of hormonal dysregulation: gut dysbiosis (which kills estrogen clearance), chronic inflammation (which spikes cortisol from omega-6 oils), xenoestrogen toxicity (from plastics and pesticides), and parasitic infections (which steal nutrients and disrupt cycles). The pill addresses none of these. It merely turns down the alarm bell while the house continues to burn.

What This Means for India

India is at an inflection point. We manufacture 50 percent of the world's generic pharmaceuticals. We produce three billion pills annually. We pride ourselves on affordable healthcare. But affordability without efficacy is just subsidized symptom suppression. Across metros like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai, the pattern is identical: young women start contraceptives in their twenties for irregular periods, and by their early thirties, they face thyroid dysfunction, metabolic syndrome, or recurrent infections.

The Indian healthcare system treats hormones like a leaking bucket. We plug the hole with chemicals instead of asking why the bucket developed a leak in the first place. Our standard medical protocol is: irregular periods? Birth control. Acne? Birth control. PCOS? Birth control. This is not medicine. This is industrial processing. We take a patient whose body is signaling dysregulation and we chemically enforce silence. The body does what bodies do — it adapts, compensates, and then breaks down in a different way.

What makes this pattern uniquely Indian is our paradox. We invented Ayurveda five thousand years ago. We understand the gut as the root of health. We know that agni (digestive fire) and ojas (immunity) are foundational. Yet our modern healthcare system abandons these principles entirely and copies a pharmaceutical model designed in the 1960s for Western women with different diet, environment, and stress profiles.

The Deeper Story Nobody is Telling

The pharmaceutical industry does not profit from root cause healing. It profits from chronic dependency. A woman on birth control for seven years generates recurring revenue. A woman who restores her gut bacteria, eliminates omega-6 oils, removes plastics from her environment, and clears parasitic infections in eighteen months becomes a one-time customer. The incentive structure is inverted against your health.

This is not conspiracy. This is mechanical. When a corporation's growth depends on repeat customers, it will optimize for repeat customers. Birth control pills are not aberrations — they are perfect expressions of a system that measures success in prescriptions written, not in patients healed.

What This Means for Your Health

First: if you or your daughter is on birth control for irregular periods or acne, understand this — you have a symptom, not a diagnosis. The symptom is a message. Birth control silences the messenger. Find the root cause instead. Test for gut dysbiosis through stool analysis. Check inflammatory markers. Screen for parasites (most Indians carry them without knowing). This costs money upfront but prevents disease later.

Second: hormonal health in India requires a different model. You need practitioners who understand both modern testing and traditional root-cause logic. Estrogen clearance depends on liver health and gut bacteria. Cortisol regulation depends on sleep, stress, and omega-3 to omega-6 ratios. PCOS and irregular cycles respond to dietary interventions far more reliably than they respond to pills.

Third: the alternative exists. Thousands of Indian women have restored their cycles, cleared their skin, and regained energy by addressing dysbiosis, inflammation, toxicity, and parasites. It takes three to six months. It requires discipline. It works because it addresses reality instead of suppressing it.
