Researchers have just published what defence strategists should read with the same urgency as a weapons acquisition report: offloading cognition to artificial intelligence erodes the human neural pathways that perform that cognition. Not gradually. Irreversibly.
A study examining cognitive offloading — the practice of letting AI write, analyse, decide, and brief — found measurable degradation in pattern recognition, situational judgment, and independent problem-solving within weeks, not years. The brain adapts. When you stop using a skill, the neural investment in that skill gets reallocated. By month three, the atrophy is already locked in.
This is not theoretical. I have walked defence manufacturing plants and ordnance factories where young engineers cannot diagnose machine failures anymore. They photograph a problem and wait for the AI summary. Last month, a critical production line broke. The AI flagged it as routine maintenance. The engineer had no ground intuition left — no pattern recognition built from years of shop floor immersion. Production stopped for 14 days. A simple bearing issue that any experienced tradesman would have caught in 15 minutes became a crisis because the cognitive layer had been hollowed out.
India's defence ecosystem is built on two fragile layers: manufacturing depth and strategic judgment. Both are now at risk.
Start with manufacturing. India's ordnance factories, naval shipyards, and aerospace suppliers depend on engineers who can read a shop floor like a doctor reads an X-ray. They know the sound of a bearing before it fails. They smell the quality of a weld. They can walk through a production line and spot a bottleneck nobody else sees. This is embodied knowledge — it lives in the nervous system, not in a database. If you hand all diagnostic work to AI, you lose the next generation of these engineers. In 15 years, when a critical system fails during wartime, nobody will know how to fix it manually because nobody has built the intuition anymore.
The second layer is strategic decision-making. Defence officers brief commanders. Analysts brief ministers. If the entire analytical chain — data synthesis, scenario modelling, risk assessment — is AI-generated, and if officers stop doing the cognitive work themselves, what happens when the AI makes a systematic error? Who catches it? During the 1971 Bangladesh War, Indian military officers had to make decisions in fog with incomplete information. They had trained their own judgment. Today, if a defence analyst outsources all his thinking to Claude or ChatGPT, his own judgment atrophies. When you need human judgment most — in crisis, under pressure — you have none left.
This is not about rejecting AI. It is about understanding the price of convenience.
India adopted IT outsourcing in the 1990s and became the world's back-office. That model created jobs but also created a structural weakness: India's IT talent became transaction-processing labour, not innovation-driving engineers. We are now repeating this mistake with AI. Instead of training defence engineers to work WITH AI — using it as a tool while maintaining their own cognitive strength — we are allowing them to outsource thinking entirely. The convenience is seductive. The cost is hidden until it is too late.
Consider this: China's defence researchers are using AI as a supplement. They are also mandating that human researchers maintain independent analytical capability. The result is redundancy — slower in peacetime, unbreakable in wartime. India is moving toward a single point of failure: complete dependence on AI for the layer that should be most human.
Within 18 months, the first operational failures caused by cognitive atrophy will surface. A weapons system will malfunction because the maintenance culture has eroded. A strategic miscalculation will happen because the analytical layer outsourced its judgment. When this happens, defence planners will scramble to rebuild capability they should never have abandoned. By then, the damage to training pipelines will be irreversible.
The counter-move is simple: mandate human-in-the-loop cognitive work across defence manufacturing and strategy. Let AI accelerate analysis. But require officers, engineers, and analysts to maintain their own judgment as a non-negotiable discipline. Inconvenient. Slower. Non-negotiable.
