India's GOBARdhan scheme is being sold to you as a green energy revolution. What it actually is — is the systematic removal of the one free probiotic resource that kept Indians healthy for 5000 years.
The GOBARdhan (Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources) scheme launched by the Government of India converts cattle dung, crop residue, and municipal waste into compressed biogas and bio-manure. On paper, it solves three problems at once: farmer income, renewable energy, and waste management. The government gets to show climate action. Energy companies get feedstock. Farmers get payment.
But here is what the policy makers missed — or deliberately ignored. Fresh cow dung is not waste. It is medicine. Gobar contains a living ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and microorganisms that your modern gut has been stripped of. When you ferment it, consume it in controlled amounts, or apply it to soil, it repopulates your intestinal microbiome. The same microbiome that processes food, fights parasites, controls inflammation, and determines whether you develop diabetes, thyroid disease, or worse. Burn it in a biogas digester, and you turn a healing nutrient into ash.
India has 300 million cattle. That is 300 million units of free probiotic medicine being fed into furnaces while your doctor charges you 10,000 rupees for a course of antibiotics that kills the same bacteria nature gives you for free.
This is not accident. This is architecture. The pharmaceutical industry in India is 50 billion dollars. Chronic disease market is growing at 12% annually. Every gut healed naturally is one less customer for diabetes medication, thyroid supplements, and IBS treatments. GOBARdhan is dressed up in sustainability language, but what it really does is clear the field — literally and metaphorically — for pharmaceutical control of health.
Meanwhile, soil microbiome across India is dead. Chemical fertilizers have killed the bacterial networks that held soil together for millennia. Gobar was the traditional regenerator. But if you burn it for energy, you cannot use it to heal soil. You cannot use it to heal humans. You solve the energy crisis and create a health crisis. Trade-off that benefits nobody except energy companies and pharma.
Look at the timeline. India invests in GOBARdhan the same decade it sees explosive growth in Type 2 diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, and autoimmune disease. Not coincidence. Causation.
The traditional Indian system — Ayurveda, Unani, indigenous farming practice — all understood that gobar was foundational. Gau raksha was never just religious sentiment. It was nutritional security. A cow gave you milk, ghee, meat if needed, dung for fuel, and dung for medicine. Remove dung from that equation, and you break the entire system. You force dependency on purchased inputs — fertilizers, medicines, supplements. You create scarcity where there was abundance.
First: Your gut is your immunity. Inflammation in the gut triggers inflammation everywhere — joints, brain, arteries, pancreas. 80% of Indians with chronic disease have compromised gut microbiome. They have been antibioticked, pesticide-fed, and probiotic-starved. Gobar contains Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus, and dozens of other organisms that reverse this. When you burn it, you burn your healing possibility.
Second: Acidity, inflammation, toxins, and parasites are the four pillars of chronic disease in India. Gobar addresses three of them — inflammation directly, parasites through beneficial bacteria, toxins through improved digestion. Your doctor treats symptoms. Gobar treats root cause. But only if it reaches your gut, not a biogas plant.
Third: The scheme offers farmers 500-1000 rupees per ton for dung. Most Indian farmers are already broke. They will sell. They have no choice. What they lose is the ability to regenerate their own soil naturally, which means next year they buy chemical fertilizer, which poisons groundwater, which shows up in your drinking water as heavy metals. Chronic disease cascades from there.
The real green revolution is not burning agricultural waste. It is restoring agricultural wisdom. But that does not make anyone money except the farmer, and the sick person who becomes well.
