When a widow in Delhi sends her monthly pension to a WhatsApp number promising to reunite her with her dead son, that is not a scam. That is the moment the Indian state admitted defeat. That is the moment we stopped being a civilization and became a marketplace.

What Actually Happened

Instagram scams targeting spiritual seekers have grown into a ₹500+ crore underground economy. The mechanism is simple but devastating: fake gurus advertise "guaranteed solutions" for cancer, infertility, job loss, business failure. They use religious language, temple aesthetics, fabricated testimonials. A factory owner believes a "prosperity ritual" will save his business. He transfers five lakh rupees. The account vanishes. The next day, the same scammer is running the same operation under a different name.

These are not isolated criminals. They are industrialized operations. Con artists have learned that Instagram's algorithm rewards emotional content. Desperation performs well. A grieving mother watching a video of a "guru" claiming to cure her daughter's infertility — that is 45 seconds of watch time. That is engagement. That is money. The platform does not ask questions. What This Means for India
